M for Menahem Lang, the child singer with a golden voice, raped by members of his community in Israel. Fifteen years later he heads off in search of those who committed the crime, in his native district of Bnei Brak, world capital of ultra-orthodox Jews, near Tel Aviv. "M", by Yolande Zauberman, 2020 César award for best documentary, is presented at the Best of Doc festival from 3 to 9 March 2021. A new opportunity to see ten of the best documentaries released in 2019 and 2020, on the VOD platform La Toile, and at the virtual cinema La Vingt-Cinquième Heure, directly associated with cinema owners/managers.
Caricatures, drawings, paintings, performances, sculptures or installations, Hassan Sharif (1951-2016) was a pioneer of conceptual art in the Middle East. A retrospective of more than 150 works is on display from 5 March to 26 September 2021 at the Saint-Étienne Métropole MAMC+ (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art). A virtual visit in condensed form will be available online from the beginning of April. Aurélie Voltz, joint curator with Hoor Al Qasimi for this travelling exhibition, looks back at the career of the Iranian-born artist who also spent time in London and Dubai. Hassan Sharif totally changed the artistic landscape of his country, the United Arab Emirates, where traditional calligraphy had long been the standard.
In the heart of Beirut, an Irishwoman and her adopted tribe run the café-bookshop Aaliya's Books. All experienced the 2019 Lebanese revolution at first hand, withstood Covid-19 and were shaken by the explosion on 4 August 2020 in the port of the Lebanese capital. Their confidences to the journalist Jean Carrère are now published in the latest edition of the magazine "XXI". A report entitled "Beirut an open book".
