Founded in 1954, the European Union has never stopped growing, notably eastwards from 2004 onwards. With the war in Ukraine, the EU's centre of gravity appears to have shifted to Eastern Europe. Poland, Hungary, Slovakia: the Russo-Ukrainian war is now being played out on their very borders.
