26 April 1986, Pripyat, near Chernobyl. On a sunny day in spring, Anya and Piotr celebrate their marriage. Valery and his father Alexeï, an engineer, plant an apple tree, whilst Nikolaï, forest ranger, does his usual tour of the woods. Suddenly there's an accident, at the power station...
